Wyoming to Ban Minors from Receiving Gender Affirming Care
Wyoming has joined the growing number of states in the US to outlaw gender- affirming care for minors following Gov. Mark Gordon’s decision to sign a legislation that would ban most procedures and treatments for people under the age of 18.
“I signed SF 99 because I support the protections this bill includes for children, however it is my belief that the government is straying into the personal affairs of families,” Gordon said in a statement.
“Our Legislature needs to sort out its intentions with regard to parental rights. While it inserts governmental prerogative in some places, it affirms parental rights in others,” Gordon said, also noting that the Legislature passed two bills during the recent session reinforcing parental rights in education.
Senate File 99 – Children’s gender change prohibition will deny young people diagnosed with gender dysphoria in Wyoming to use puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or surgeries.
The bill, named as “Chloe’s Law,” was named after a woman who went under the knife for a double mastectomy as a child in California but lived to regret it. This succeeded in the legislature in the wake of outrage among republicans over treatments for children who are diagnosed with gender dysphoria.
The bill’s supporters spoke of how children are not mature enough to make critical decisions about their gender.
“This bill is designed to protect our children until they become mature adults,” commenter Gary Brown said in the House Judiciary Committee.
