Vermont Man Charged with Attempted Murder for Shooting at Three Palestinian Americans

More details have emerged of the possible hate crime attack on the three Palestinian-Americans in Burlington, Vermont, USA that took place on Saturday November 26, 2023.

Jason Eaton, 48, was arraigned in the Chittendon County Criminal Court after he was arrested on Sunday, a day after the attack.

Families of the victims confirmed that two of the students were wearing the symbolic Palestinian Keffiyeh and one of them was speaking Arabic and English. The attacker screamed at the students and each victim was fired at once.

The three friends – identified in court documents as Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad and Kinnan Abdalhamid, all aged 20 – remained under medical care. They have gunshot wounds to the spine and chest. At least one of them is in critical condition.

The suspect was taken into custody after an agent knocked on his door. He said to the agent, “I’ve been waiting for you,” holding his hands out.

“Although we do not yet have evidence to support a hate crime enhancement, I do want to be clear that there is no question that this was a hateful act,” said Sarah Fair George, state’s attorney for Chittenden County, during a briefing on Monday.

This comes amid the ongoing Israeli War on Gaza with heightened Islamophobia and attacks on the Palestinian community, as well as those who express pro-Palestinian solidarity in the United States.
