House Republicans Release Impeachment Article Against Homeland Security Secretary

House Republicans have released two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday Jan. 28, officially unveiling the charges as they brace to punish the secretary over the administration’s mishandling of the U.S-Mexico border.

Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee accused Mayorkas of “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and a “breach of public trust.” The committee will meet on Tuesday Jan. 30.

Republicans have accused Mayorkas on multiple occasions for failing to enforce the nation’s laws as scores of migrants arrived at the U.S-Mexico border. However, Democrats and the Department of Homeland Security have condemned the impeachment effort as a “baseless” political attack, stating that experts who testified that Mayorkas’ conduct failed to raise to the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors,” which is the legal basis for impeachment under the Constitution.

This would potentially make Mayorkas the first Cabinet official to be impeached since 1876.
