US Spacecraft Aimed for Moon Malfunctions, Destroys Itself
A US spacecraft aiming for the moon ended up bursting into flames over the pacific instead.
‘Peregrine One’ reportedly malfunctioned and was instead commanded to destroy itself.
The private operator, a Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic, guided the craft into the Earth’s atmosphere to burn up.
“Space exploration is a learning game, especially at this stage and we shouldn’t look at this as a failure; we should look at this as an incredible engineering success,” Sian Cleaver, Airbus’ Orion European Service Module industrial manager, said.
Leaking propellant from a non-functioning oxidiser tank resulted in the explosion.
