Nicaragua Cuts Ties with Ecuador after Vice President Arrested in Raid on Mexican Embassy

Mexico is ceasing diplomatic relations with Ecuador after police barged into the Mexican embassy in Quito and arrested former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, who was seeking asylum there.

In a statement, the Government of President Daniel Ortega said that its “sovereign decision to break all diplomatic relations with the Ecuadorian government” following the “unusual and reprehensible action.”

Ecuadorian authorities arrested former Vice President Jorge Glas on Friday, April 5, by ushering him out of the Mexican embassy and triggering Mexico to suspend bilateral relations.

Glas, who has been convicted twice for corruption, was reportedly hiding in the embassy in Quito since seeking political asylum in December 2023.
