Hassan Nizam: Coaching with Purpose

Hassan Nizam, 26, was the youngest basketball coach in the MHSAA to lead Roseville High School toward three district titles and a regional championship. In May 2021, he was hired as head coach of the Macomb Community College men’s basketball team, the Macomb Monarchs.

After his arrival, the Monarchs reigned as conference champions for the first time in 38 years. Following a historical season, Nizam, also known as coach Niz, was crowned 2022 Men’s Junior College Coach of the year by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. And, while his career looks promising, Nizam’s long-term goal isn’t solely fixated on the big leagues.

Coaching is about the impact you make,” Nizam said. “So as much as I’d like to be the head coach of the Pistons, it’s more about being in a position where you could have a major impact on others.”

Nizam’s approach to coaching isn’t just about earning wins. Rather, he aims to build a safe and comfortable environment for his players. As an Arab-American who grew up in Dearborn, Mich. Nizam places a high value on the importance of family. The Arab culture in Dearborn is one that is family-oriented, which he implements in his coaching strategy to ensure that his team plays as a cohesive unit.

Nizam attributes his work ethic to his parents, grandparents and older siblings. He praises them for their discipline and admires the way they have respectfully treated others. His Muslim faith reinforces these positive attitudes and influence his coaching style.

His passion for basketball started at a young age while playing in his home driveway with his brother. His love for the sport was driven by the skills of the late Kobe Bryant who was known for his dedication and competitive nature. And, Nizam not only loves basketball, but he recognizes the benefit that sports have on today’s youth.

My religion is big on helping others, and coaching is all about helping others become the best version of themselves.” Nizam said.

The purity of sports is something you can’t replicate. The relationships you build, the adversity you must go through, the highs and lows of a season, the practices, and the memories you create are invaluable,” He said. “Staying out of trouble and doing the right things are important for student athletes and sports usually helps (them) stay on the right path academically, socially, and who they surround themselves with.”

According to Nizam, high school and collegiate athletes have some differences, but ultimately the life lessons end up being the same. He emphasizes to his teams that life is more than just basketball. It’s about taking the steps towards future success, whether that’s earning a degree, or changing one’s life for the better.

John Ukomadu is a forward who has played under Nizam for over three years. He said that playing for Nizam entails spending time as a team on and off the court.

Niz always finds a way to keep us together…whether we’re eating at a restaurant or going to the movies; it’s always some activity he thinks of to keep us together as a brotherhood,” Ukomadu said.

Nizam is on track to achieve great heights in the sport of basketball, and it’s likely he will go far. But, despite the record-breaking accolades he’s achieved, his purpose in coaching is intended for the greater good.

Whatever God has planned is how I look at it,” Nizam said.

I’ve been blessed thus far and hope to continue to have opportunities to help others accomplish their goals.”
