8 Indian Navy Officials Sentenced to Death by Qatar After Spying for Israel

Qatar has sentenced 8 Indian navy personnel to death after they were arrested last year on charges of spying on a submarine program “on behalf of Israel.” This has shocked the Indian government who has maintained relatively good ties with Qatar.

The Indian nationals who were employees of Al Dahra company were taken into custody in August 2022 in a case of “espionage.” The chief executive of Dahra Global reportedly flew to Doha to get his officials released but ended up in solitary confinement for two months, before he was granted bail. “Dahra Global Technologies and Consulting services is a private company that offers training and various other services to the defense and security agencies of Qatar.”

The company was later shut down on May 23, 2023 and had employed as many as 75 Indian nationals, most of them former navy personnel.

India’s ambassador to Qatar was granted consular access and met the men in prison on October 1, 2023.

The eight Indian Navy personnel were then handed the death penalty in Qatar by a local court.
