Trump Admin to Review Billions in Harvard Grants Over ‘Antisemitism’

The Trump administration announced a review of nearly $9 billion in multi-year grant commitments to Harvard University as part of an investigation into alleged antisemitism. The review, led by the Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and the General Services Administration, will scrutinize more than $255.6 million in current contracts and $8.7 billion in grants. Officials say the goal is to ensure Harvard complies with federal regulations, including civil rights responsibilities.
“Harvard’s failure to protect students on campus from anti-Semitic discrimination—all while promoting divisive ideologies over free inquiry—has put its reputation in serious jeopardy,” said Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. The administration may issue stop-work orders and has asked Harvard to disclose all federal contracts not included in the initial review.
This is part of a broader crackdown on universities over pro-Palestinian activism. In February, the administration pulled over $400 million in federal funding from Columbia University, forcing changes to its disciplinary policies and academic programs. Columbia complied with many demands but faced national backlash, leading to the resignation of its interim president.
The Federal Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, created by Trump’s executive order in January, has notified 10 universities of federal funding reviews. Some institutions, including Harvard and NYU, have adopted the controversial IHRA definition of antisemitism under pressure. A judge has since blocked Trump’s directive to freeze federal grants and loans, but universities remain on edge as investigations continue.
