The US Refuses to Recognize Nicolas Maduro as President of Venezuela
The US has once again refused to recognize Nicolas Maduro as the President of Venezuela, after refusing to recognize him in the 2019 elections as well. Maduro was elected to a third term on July 28. However, the US claims that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez secured the most votes.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated, “Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election.”
However, President Maduro announced on Wednesday that the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) has made arrangements to provide full and transparent voting records.
On Friday August 1, the National Electoral Council (CNE) published the second bulletin of the presidential elections, which confirmed that Nicolas Maduro secured 51.95% of the votes, while Edmundo Gonzalez acquired only 43.18%.
Maduro stressed that the far-right “did everything possible to implement a violent scenario by sabotaging public services such as electricity and causing the suspension of the elections,” emphasizing that “this plan was known before, during, and after July 28.”
Following Maduro’s victory, Western backed far-right mobs engaged in violent riots across the capital Caracus, leading to at least 1,200 arrests.
Nonetheless, President Maduro has announced that his country is ready to resume dialogue with the US, provided that the latter is willing to respect Venezuela’s sovereignty and halt threats to the Latin American country. Such diplomatic relations would be conditioned on the agreements made in Qatar, where the two countries met last year for secret negotiations.
The Qatar agreement is based on three phases, which would ultimately lead to the normalization of diplomatic relations between the US and Venezuela.
