House Passes New Budget Containing $100 Billion for Defense and Cuts on Food Programs for Low-Income People

The House narrowly approved a budget resolution on Tuesday that would add $100 billion in defense spending over the next decade while making deep cuts to domestic programs. The measure, part of a broader Republican effort to advance President Donald Trump’s economic agenda, passed on a 217-215 party-line vote.

The plan increases military and border security funding while extending $4.5 trillion in tax cuts. It also sets the stage for using reconciliation, a process that allows Republicans to bypass Democratic opposition and pass financial legislation with a simple Senate majority. The Senate has passed a separate version of the resolution, calling for a $150 billion military boost, though Trump prefers a single comprehensive bill.

House Armed Services Committee Chair Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) said the $100 billion increase will support border security, strengthen the defense industrial base, replenish munitions, expand shipbuilding, and enhance missile defense. He argued it would restore military spending to over 4% of GDP, up from the current 3%.

The resolution directs lawmakers to detail how the funds will be allocated over the next decade. It also boosts Coast Guard funding, with Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) praising its role in maritime security.

However, the budget would add $3 trillion to the deficit while making steep cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs. Democrats condemned the plan, warning it would harm millions of veterans and low-income Americans.

Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) criticized the budget as an attack on veterans, accusing Republicans of using their benefits to offset tax cuts. “This is completely unacceptable,” he said, urging lawmakers to reject the proposal.
