Millions of Pilgrims Arrive in Iraq’s Holy City of Karbala for Annual ‘Arbaeen’ Procession

The Arbaeen pilgrimage, commemorating the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), will take place on August 25, 2024. It is one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world, with millions of Shia Muslims converging on the holy city of Karbala, Iraq. Pilgrims, primarily from Iraq and Iran, but also from over 150 countries, journey long distances, often on foot, to honor the sacrifice of Imam Hussein during the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD

This year, the pilgrimage is expected to draw over 22 million attendees, continuing the trend of record-breaking participation seen in recent years. In 2023, the event attracted approximately 22 million pilgrims, up from 21.2 million in 2022 and 16.3 million in 2021. Despite global disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the pilgrimage has only grown larger, underscoring its significance as a deeply spiritual event in Shia Islam.

Iran plays a major role in the pilgrimage, with around 2.6 million Iranians already having crossed into Iraq in 2024. In preparation for the influx of pilgrims, Iranian and Iraqi officials have worked closely to manage border crossings, ensuring smooth passage. Moukebs—temporary shelters offering food, water, and medical aid—have been set up along the pilgrimage routes, supported by thousands of volunteers and aid organizations. These shelters are critical for the safety and comfort of the millions who walk for days to reach Karbala.

Arbaeen is not only a moment of deep religious reflection but also a symbol of unity, justice, resilience, and defiance against tyranny and oppression. Such timeless messages attract Muslims from other denominations, Christians, and people of all faiths to attend the pilgrimage as well. The event continues to grow each year, highlighting the enduring legacy of Imam Hussein and the profound resonance his martyrdom holds for millions across the globe.
