Legal Status Revoked for Nearly One Million Migrants in the US

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the termination of parole protections for nearly one million migrants who entered the United States using the CBP One mobile app during the Biden administration. The move effectively strips legal status from approximately 985,000 individuals who had been allowed entry via scheduled appointments at ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In a statement, DHS accused the previous administration of misusing its parole authority, stating, “The Biden Administration abused the parole authority to allow millions of illegal aliens into the U.S., which further fueled the worst border crisis in U.S. history. Canceling these paroles is a promise kept to the American people to secure our borders and protect national security.”

Migrants impacted by the decision have begun receiving email notifications instructing them to self-deport using the rebranded CBP One app, now called CBP Home. Those who do not comply may face fines of $998 per day under a Trump-era penalty system that the current administration is enforcing. The DHS also warned that migrants who fail to leave on time could be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, and possibly face imprisonment.

The move does not apply to individuals who entered under humanitarian programs such as Uniting for Ukraine or Operation Allies Welcome, which provided refuge for Afghans.

This is the latest in a series of immigration rollbacks by the administration. Earlier this year, parole was revoked for more than 500,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who had entered under a similar process requiring U.S.-based sponsors. Their parole protections are set to expire on April 24.

The administration has also attempted to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for around 600,000 Venezuelans and 500,000 Haitians, but has been temporarily blocked by court orders as the matter continues to be litigated.
