Dozens of Pro-Palestine Activists Arrested Outside Israeli Consulate in Chicago
U.S. police detained dozens of pro-Palestine protesters outside the Israeli consulate in Chicago on Tuesday night, demanding an end to Israel’s prolonged assault on Gaza. Clashes erupted outside the Accenture Tower, where the consulate is located, leading to the arrest of at least 67 individuals, including two journalists. The National Lawyers Guild confirmed the detentions, which followed a demonstration organized by the group Behind Enemy Lines.
The protesters, chanting and beating drums, voiced their anger over the U.S. President Joe Biden’s unwavering support for Israel. One protester even set an American flag on fire. Among those arrested was photographer Sinna Nasseri, who has contributed to The New Yorker and The New York Times. As detainees were led away, many chanted “Free Palestine” in defiance.
This crackdown coincided with the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, where Kamala Harris was celebrated as the party’s presidential candidate. Behind Enemy Lines held multiple rallies condemning U.S. support for Israel, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and an arms embargo against Israel.
On Monday, 19 more pro-Palestine protesters were arrested for allegedly breaching security at the DNC venue. To date, Israel’s offensive has resulted in over 40,000 Palestinian deaths and tens of thousands of injuries, predominantly among women and children. The U.S. remains Israel’s primary ally, supplying arms and blocking UN resolutions for a humanitarian ceasefire.
