Disney’s Snow White Boycotted by Pro-Palestine Voices and Trump Supporters for Different Reasons

Actress Rachel Zegler is receiving widespread praise for her vocal support of Palestine, despite pressure from Disney and co-star Gal Gadot. Variety reported that after Zegler tweeted “and always remember, free Palestine,” Disney executives were angered, and security for Gadot was increased. Producer Marc Platt personally asked Zegler to delete the tweet, but she refused.

Disney’s live-action Snow White had a poor opening, earning $44.3 million domestically and a 42% critic score. Some claim Disney is scapegoating Zegler for the failure rather than acknowledging boycotts over Gadot’s support for Israel. Platt later required Zegler to have a “social media guru” after she posted “F*** Donald Trump” and “May Trump supporters … never know peace.”

The Variety article, which also criticized actress Melissa Barrera for supporting Palestine, portrayed Zegler as responsible for the film’s flop. However, many online say the article makes her look “infinitely cooler.” A widely shared post noted, “Rachel Zegler had one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers fly out to ask her to delete a pro-Palestine tweet, and she refused.”

Critics argue the backlash against Zegler contrasts with Disney’s treatment of Gadot, who openly supports Israel and served in its military. One social media user wrote, “It’s not lost on me that Gal Gadot is allowed to give a speech about Israel, but Zegler writing ‘Free Palestine’ is seen as too political.”

Some believe Disney’s attempt to blame Zegler is a cover-up for the film’s failure, arguing Gadot’s “wooden acting” and public stance were bigger factors. Others say the backlash against Zegler would not have happened if she had supported a different cause.

Zegler joins a growing list of actors, including Palestinian-Egyptian actress May Calamawy, who have faced industry repercussions for supporting Palestine. Many believe she is being unfairly targeted for advocating human rights while her co-star faces no scrutiny.
